Sometimes, a smart alternative might work better for you—and that’s where replacement supports come in.

At NDIS Superhero, we know how important flexibility is when it comes to getting the most from your plan. Let’s break down how replacement supports work and how they could help you live more independently.

What Are NDIS Replacement Supports?

Replacement supports are alternative items or services that you can use instead of an existing support in your NDIS plan.

  • They’re not extra supports or additional funding
They’re a swap—you trade one support for another
They must be approved before you buy them

Think of it as choosing a tool that works better for your goals, while staying within your existing budget.

The Rules: What Makes a Support “Replaceable”?

To qualify as a replacement support, your item must:

  • Replace an existing NDIS support already funded in your plan
  • Cost the same or less than what it’s replacing
  • Work just as well—or even better—for your needs/goals
  • Meet the reasonable and necessary criteria

The goal? To help you need less direct support, build independence, and stay connected with your community.

What Items Can Be Replacement Supports?

The NDIS has outlined five types of assistive technology (AT) that might be approved as replacement supports:

  1. Household appliances like washing machines or dishwashers
  2. Smartwatches
  3. Smartphones
  4. Tablets
  5. Accessibility or communication apps

These items can make everyday tasks easier and reduce the need for support workers.

How It Works: Real Example

Current support: A support worker visits daily to help you turn on/off lights and appliances
Replacement support: A smart tablet lets you control your devices remotely
Outcome: You gain independence, need less support, and save NDIS funds

Cost comparison:

  • Traditional support: $49,000/year (2 hours daily)
  • Replacement support: $600 (tablet) + $2,800 (training) = $3,400
  • Total annual saving: $45,500

Pretty super, right?

How to Apply for a Replacement Support

Before you purchase anything, you need to complete a Replacement Support Application Form and get NDIS approval.

You’ll need to explain:

  • What support you want to replace
  • Why the new item will work better
  • How much it will cost (including setup/training)
  • What support worker hours or other supports it replaces
  • Optional: A quote from a provider

Once approved, you can go ahead and purchase your new item.

If not approved, the NDIS will explain why—but note: their decision is final and not reviewable.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Approval is valid only for your current plan
  • You must apply again for any future plans
  • If buying from a non-registered provider, you’ll need to be plan managed (like with NDIS Superhero) or self-managed
  • You can only apply for the same support once every 12 months, unless your situation changes
  • Everyday costs like internet or phone plans won’t be funded

Is a Replacement Support Right for You?

Replacement supports are all about giving you more choice and control. If there’s a device or tool that could help you do things more independently—or save you time, money, or energy—it could be worth applying.

Not sure how to start? That’s what we’re here for.
