The Christmas season is here, and we hope it’s filled with joy, rest and connection. The festive period can also bring changes to routines, support availability and service hours—so a little planning goes a long way.
Here are 10 practical tips to help you manage your NDIS plan smoothly over Christmas.

1. Check Your Service Providers’ Holiday Hours

Many NDIS providers have shutdown periods or reduced staffing over Christmas and New Year. (Even NDIS Superhero won’t be working on Christmas Day!)
Reach out early to confirm availability so you aren’t caught without essential supports.

2. Plan Your Support Rosters Earlier Than Usual

Christmas is busy for everyone—workers included. Make sure your roster is booked well in advance to secure the shifts you need.
If you rely on regular supports, lock them in now.

3. Confirm Support With Your Team

Talk to your support coordinator, and/or support workers about:

  • Holiday operating hours
  • Travel plans
  • Backup staff
  • Any changes to your regular schedule
Clear communication now prevents stress later.

4. Book Travel or Short-Term Accommodation Early

If you’re travelling or considering respite/STA over the holidays, providers often fill up quickly.
Use your NDIS budget to secure bookings sooner rather than later.

5. Refill Medications Before Pharmacies Close

Pharmacy hours change over Christmas, and many close on public holidays.
Make sure you:

  • Refill scripts
  • Organise repeats
  • Check opening hours
Running out of medication over the break is the last thing anyone needs.

6. Stock Up on Everyday Supplies

Order extra consumables, personal care items, continence supplies or mealtime products.
Delivery delays are common around Christmas—so plan ahead.

7. Check Your Assistive Technology and Equipment

Make sure wheelchairs, mobility aids, communication devices and other tech are:

  • Charged
  • Working properly
  • Serviced (if needed)
If repairs might be needed, contact your provider early—many technicians take holidays too.

8. Use Your NDIS Plan to Support Festive Activities

Your plan can be used for supports that help you achieve your goals—even during Christmas.
Think of activities like:

  • Cooking Christmas lunch with support
  • Planning social events
  • Accessing the community
  • Decorating or shopping with assistance
If it’s linked to your goals, it’s worth exploring!

9. Keep Track of Your Spending

It’s easy to lose track during the holidays.
Check your:

  • Budget balances
  • Monthly spending
  • Expected future costs
Your plan should last the full year, so keep an eye on your funds as you move into the new year.

If you have any questions about your budget, contact NDIS Superhero for support!

10. Give Yourself Permission to Rest

The holidays can be overwhelming changes in routine, increased social events, and extra sensory input can take a toll.
Plan downtime, create calm spaces, and schedule supports that help you feel comfortable and in control.
